Here are some steps that can be used as a guide for switching to a whole-food, plant-based diet;

1. Know why you are doing it

Before you start, know why you are doing it. This makes the transition easier and motivates you to continue.

Mine was initially for a health issue, friends advised me to eat gluten-free and lactose-free, then I agreed to try Veganuary [Vegan January] in 2019. Since then, I've never eaten meat again. My body works so much better, I felt energized, lighter, and more focused.

2. Change your mindset

Approach it as a new opportunity, a new challenge, and a new positive change in your life!

3. Educate yourself

As I wrote in a previous post, know your food! The more you learn about health, nutrition, and farming, the easier it will be to create your meals. This will help you make simple whole-food and plant-based choices.

As with everything else, it will be easier to create recipes, mix ingredients, and find your basic meals in rotation.

4. Make the changes slowly

One step at a time. Start with breakfast, for example, it's the easiest change to make. How about a bowl of oats with fresh fruit or a green smoothie with dates to start the day?

To make this change sustainable, start with one day of plant-based eating per week, then gradually increase it. Taking small steps, like eating one plant-based meal a day, can be a big win for the future - both for your health and for the planet!

5. Stock your pantry with grains, nuts, and seeds

What also helps me is having a well-stocked pantry of essentials at all times: brown rice, lentils, quinoa, raisins, dates, cashews, pecans, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, and nuts in glass storage jars.

6. Plan your meals

When you're first starting out, rotating a few recipes is the key to sustainability! Planning your meals a week in advance helps you get organized. It's different for everyone, but my plate consists of 2/4 veggies, 1/4 protein, and 1/4 carbs, so I can shop accordingly!

If you are planning to transition to a plant-based diet, tell me why, and if you have any more advice, please comment!
